Did you ever wonder why some figure photgraphs look so much better than others? For some reason, one picture of a man or woman looks better than the other? Is it the photographer or the model?
Well it's a little of both, but ultimately it's the photographer that makes the difference and not for the reasons you might think. Sure, the quality of the lighting, the type of camera, the look of the model, they all play a role in building a great photo. However, the real secret is in the pose....
Figure photograpy is not unlike landscape or still life photography, the subject and the pose, make the difference between a good photo and a bad one. Great photographers understand how to pose their model for the best pics, the best effects. Posing is as much an art as the actual taking of the picture, which in and of itself is largely technical in nature.
Paying careful attention to a pose, making sure it suits the model, the background and the subject matter of the photograph, is at the heart of a good picture.
I am the first to admit, I am not the best at arranging poses, but I have learned some stuff as I go, one thing for certain, is knowing that you cannot count on the model to get the pose right. It's not really their responsiblity, as a photographer, it is your responsibility to make a good photo, and that includes deciding on the pose, and helping the model to find the one that is right for her (or him).
